Circumcision is the removal of the foreskin in a male child. The practice of circumcision was instituted in biblical times. The most common reasons cited for circumcision include improvement in hygiene, prevention of infection, religious beliefs.

Although commonly practiced, there is considerable debate regarding the benefits of circumcision and many families prefer to leave their male children uncircumcised. There are however some medical indications for circumcision. The complete inability to retract the foreskin (phimosis) or the development of a penile infection, the presence of a congenital abnormality that increases the risk of urinary tract infection, are some of the indications for circumcision.
